Trump is open to reform of biofuels policy, say senators

US President Donald Trump would consider reforms of biofuels policy as long as jobs are protected in refining and agriculture sectors, according to senators who met with the president this week.

The senators requested the meeting with Trump because they fear that the country's Renewable Fuel Standard could render refineries uneconomic in their states.

Texas senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who led the lawmaker delegation, said Trump was open to a “win-win” solution.

Other senators at the meeting said Trump had expressed a desire to help refiners in a way that also protects the interests of the agribusiness sector.

Oil refiners are hostile to the RFS because of the costs of blending and regulation, adding that it offers incentives to rival fuels.
